PM Lukšić: EU vital for Montenegro’s future

Vienna, Austria (9 June 2011) – It is essential for the future of the Montenegrin society to be inside the European Union, not only for economic benefits or political institution building, but for the things that matter the most – values and reforms, Prime Minister Igor Lukšić emphasised participating in the session “Stress test for Europe” which took place within the World Economic Forum on Europe and Asia on 7-9 June in Vienna.

PM Lukšić stressed that, due to the economic crisis, Northern Africa and other global issues, the Western Balkans may be losing the attention of the international public, which, on the other hand, can be rather stimulating for the countries of the region to introduce more efforts to deserve that attention. In this regard, he referred to the Serbian Government’s decision to extradite war crime fugitive Ratko Mladić to the Hague, which will, in his words, help other countries to be valued and stimulated properly in their EU membership aspirations.

The two-day conference brought together more than 500 distinguished political and business leaders and prominent civil society figures from more than 65 countries to discuss the most challenging global, political and economic issues.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Lukšić pointed out that Montenegro is currently implementing reforms necessary for receiving the date for the launch of the accession talks. “But once the accession talks start, it will take more effort to explain people all the benefits, advantages and disadvantages of the EU membership, but I still believe that the vast majority will support the European integration”, said the PM.
