Montenegro celebrates UN Day
The UN 65th Anniversary was celebrated in Montenegro at a ceremony hosted by MFA Milan Rocen and the UN Resident Representative Alexander Avanessov on Saturday, October 23.
Mr Avanessov commended the progress of Montenegro on meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), he congratulated on the MDG Mid-Term Progress Report presented earlier this year, and invited both Montenegro and all the countries of the world to work even harder on sustainable human development. Mr Avanessov welcomed the responsible approach of Montenegro to its role within the UN, especially underlining the “Delivering as One” integrated programme as a new chapter of a more structured, coherent and effective cooperation between Montenegro and the UN.
He voiced confidence that this programme would be successful and make a difference in people’s lives. He attributed this optimism to a very good cooperation with Montenegro, which was symbolised by a recent visit of Helen Clarke, the Chairwoman of the UN Development Group, and the inauguration of the construction of the UN Eco-building with PM Milo Djukanovic.
MFA Rocen said that the UN is an irreplaceable international forum that has, for the past 65 years, contributed to the attainment of global peace and security and has made the world more just for all nations.
Protection of the environment, non-proliferation, empowering women, peace and stability, human rights and democracy promotion are only some of the issues that have been on the UN agenda, said the MFA, adding that Montenegro’s constant support to the UN in its efforts has made it an important partner for the UN.
The “Delivering as One” programme, the MFA underlined, is extremely important for the continuation of such good practices and for the fulfilment of the goals of the Organisation, as well as for the overall cooperation of the UN System in Montenegro with Montenegrin institutions.
Montenegro pledges its commitment to the preservation of peace in the world through Montenegro’s engagement in peace-keeping operations, as well as through national recruitment of young Montenegrin staff that will contribute to the UN mission on a daily basis, said MFA Rocen, concluding that the goals of the UN, including the MDGs, entirely correspond to the foreign policy objectives of Montenegro and that Montenegro and the UN will continue to work together on attaining all of them.
