Montenegro signs momentous extradition treaty with Serbia, arrests wanted fugitives
Montenegro and Serbia signed Friday the Agreement to Amend the Extradition Agreement between Montenegro and Serbia. The Agreement, which took effect immediately, creates an effective legal basis for the extradition of own nationals who are either suspects or defendants in cases of criminal wrongdoing such as organized crime, crimes against humanity, corruption and money laundering. Soon after the signing of the Agreement, Montenegrin police arrested six criminals wanted by Serbia in a swift police operation.
The document signing was originally announced for November 2, but the tactical necessity for action against organised crime led to an earlier signing of the Agreement by Serbian Justice Minister Snezana Malovic and Montenegrin Ambassador Igor Jovovic.
The immediate outcome of the early signing was an unexpected operation by Montenegrin police that resulted in six arrests and detentions of Montenegrin nationals wanted by Serbia for organised crime, robbery, and bribery. This operation has confirmed, as stated in the Police Administration press release, that Montenegro is not a “safe haven” for fugitives from justice.
The Agreement is subject to ratification by both Parliaments, but is effective as from the moment of signing.
