DPM Markovic promotes open communication with media, civil society
Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Dusko Markovic organised a working breakfast with media representatives for talks on the Draft Action Plan for meeting seven key European Commission (EC) recommendations, including fight against organised crime and corruption, strengthening independent judiciary, regional cooperation and other topics on the Government 2011 agenda.
“Results not well presented to the public are as good as non-existent. This is why we have decided to establish a model of open communication with the media and the civil society, as a partnership that is of national interest,” said DPM Markovic.
He underlined the rule of law and fight against organised crime and corruption as the two key domestic policy goals, putting special emphasis on the importance of efficient application of the law, which he characterised as the “biggest challenge in Montenegro.”
The DPM echoed the view of Montenegro’s European partners that constitutional amendments do not necessarily lead to a better safeguard of independent judiciary. He also announced a new set of legislation to be proposed to the Parliament’s spring session to address “criteria for appointment, career promotion and disciplinary liability of holders of judicial offices.” He moved on to conclude that “it is equally important to create a social atmosphere in which they will be able to do their jobs unhindered.”
He stressed in particular the importance of regional cooperation and civic education for effective fight against organised crime and corruption.
Other important topics at the working breakfast were the challenges in implementing the Extradition Agreement with Serbia, the issue of intellectual property of electronic media in Montenegro and the forthcoming census.
