Justice Minister: Montenegro ahead of plan in meeting EU commitments

The Ministry of Justice has drafted a set of amendments to the laws governing the area of judiciary, which meets the commitments from the Action Plan on the European Commission’s recommendations that were originally due at the end of this year’s second quarter.
This proves Montenegro’s dedication and promptness in meeting the commitments laid down in its European agenda, which is why it has been recognised as a good news story in the region, Minister Dusko Markovic remarked at a meeting with Head of the Western Balkans Unit at the EU Directorate General for External and Political-Military Affairs Jonas Jonsson on Wednesday, March 23.
He underlined in particular the government’s efforts to combat organized crime and corruption, arguing that the country is facing a twofold problem in that regard – both in terms of perception and in reality.
“We are fighting against organized crime on both tracks, by creating a good social environment that enables the authorities to do their job, and by strengthening their capacity to combat crime. We are particularly committed to regional cooperation and we expect new results in this context in the near future,” said Markovic
Mr. Jonsson noted that Montenegro’s reforms along the EU integration path are not a goal in themselves and emphasised their importance for the region as a whole.
