More transparency is needed in providing medical assistance, with a view to decreasing both the corruption and the perception of corruption, Health Minister Miodrag Radunovic told the meeting of directors and chairmen of health institutions on Wednesday.

The meeting, which discussed the findings of a survey on the Assessment of Integrity of the Healthcare System in Montenegro, acknowledged the existence of informal payments for medical services, which limits the access to health care.

Minister Radunovic underlined that the right to health care is a universal right enshrined in the Constitution, which is why the traditional habit of giving presents or making informal payments to medical staff as a token of appreciation for their services should be eradicated.

He underlined the necessity of launching an awareness campaign that would help change this tradition, promote transparency of the health system and protect every citizen’s constitutional right to medical care.
