EU’s Mirel: Impressive judiciary reforms in Montenegro
Podgorica, Montenegro (29 April 2011) – Past four months have seen impressive judiciary reforms in Montenegro and an impressive approach to their implementation, coupled with a broad dialogue with the civil society, said European Commission’s Pierre Mirel in his meeting with Justice Minister Duško Marković.
Marković acquainted Mirel with Government’s activities in the area of judiciary and fight against organised crime and corruption, adding that the Government recognises potential challenges to reform and will do its utmost to remove the obstacles and implement reforms. “This is primarily our key national interest, and by the same token a good EU membership recommendation,” concluded Marković.
Marković also explained legal novelties introduced in the area of judiciary and underlined the importance of the Commission’s expert assistance, and in particular that of the joint investigative team that is currently being established.
The two officials also discussed ways to improve the status of displaced persons in Montenegro.
They concluded that Montenegro is a positive example to the whole region in terms of meeting the EU membership requirements.
