Podgorica, Montenegro (31 May 2011) – Montenegrin police arrested a 36-year-old woman from Serbia at the Serbia-Montenegro border crossing on Monday, 30 May, following an Interpol Rome warrant suspecting her of being part of a criminal group involved in cocaine smuggling and distribution in Italy and other European countries.

She was arrested on attempting to enter Montenegro from Serbia at the eastern border crossing of Dračenovac, near Tutin, Serbia. The suspect is wanted by the Italian authorities to stand trial before the court in Bari, southern Italy. Her case will be referred to the investigative judge in Montenegro for further proceedings and committal to extradition custody.

The woman, who holds a Serbian citizenship, was arrested in the international operation “Checkmate”. The operation previously resulted in the arrest and extradition to the Italian Police of Duško Mićunović (59) from Belgrade, wanted by Interpol Rome to stand trial for drug trafficking and criminal association, and the apprehension of Montenegrin citizen Saša Subačev (49).
