Podgorica, Montenegro (9 June 2011) -- The Montenegrin police arrested this morning five persons on suspicion of being part of an international criminal group smuggling skunk cannabis.
The international operation, carried out on the territories of Montenegro, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, resulted in the arrest of twelve persons (5 in Montenegro, 2 in Croatia and 5 in Bosnia and Herzegovina) and the seizure of 28 kilograms of the highly potent strain of cannabis. Two of the persons arrested in Bosnia are border police officers.
The operation, codenamed ‘Sprint’ in Montenegro and ‘Babolee’ in Bosnia and Croatia, was simultaneously conducted in all three countries early this morning.
The Montenegrin police arrested 24-year-old Veljko M. Knežević from Podgorica, who is suspected of being one of the crime group leaders, Ivan V. Stijepović, Jovan S. Miranović, Saša S. Vuković and Rajko G. Kovačević, while 35-year-old Dragoljub S. Kovačević, aka Ćićo is still wanted.
The suspects are believed to be part of a long-standing criminal operation smuggling cannabis from Albania to Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia in shipments ranging between 5kg and 20kg.
Since the beginning of 2011, the Montenegrin police carried out five international police operations, which resulted in the seizure of nearly 900 kg of narcotics, including 370kg of cocaine, 528kg of skunk cannabis and 1 kilo of cocaine.
