Podgorica, Montenegro (23 June 2011) – The Montenegrin police signed earlier today a Memorandum of Understanding with the local gay activist group LGBT Forum Progress, delivering on the Government’s promise of full institutional support to the LGBT community.

Furthermore, demonstrating the Government’s support for Montenegro’s first-ever gay parade, the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights has sent a letter to LGBT Forum Progress calling for the inaugural meeting of the Steering Committee for Montenegro’s first-ever gay parade. The Government previously delegated two deputy ministers to the Steering Committee for the LGBT event.

Zdravko Cimbaljevic, the CEO of LGBT Forum Progress, welcomed the signing of the MoU as the first step in building confidence between the LGBT community and government institutions.

He praised, in particular, the role of the Chief of Police and other police executives in promoting the sensitivity and capacity of the Montenegrin police for work with LGBT persons.

The Montenegrin police received “The Friend of Justice” award at the conference ‘Justice in the Balkans: Equality for Sexual Minorities’ last month, in recognition of its outstanding commitment to protecting the rights of sexual minorities.
