Senior EU official welcomes Montenegro’s commitment to integration as good signal for EU member states

Podgorica, Montenegro (8 July 2011) -- Prime Minister Igor Lukšić met with Director-General of the European Commission’s DG Enlargement Stefano Sannino for talks on Montenegro’s progress in meeting the requirements for the launch of EU accession negotiations.
During the talks, Mr Sannino noted that Montenegro has made good progress in meeting Europe’s recommendations and that its institutions, and the society as a whole, have demonstrated full commitment to the EU integration process.
PM Lukšić emphasised that the Government has completed its commitmments from the Action Plan within the projected time frame and expressed hope that the Parliament will now follow suit.
The EU official described Montenegro’s dedication as a good signal to the member states, which are to decide on the date for EU entry talks, that the country’s European agenda is moving in the right direction. He, however, underlined the importance of adopting the election law with a broad consensus of political parties and voiced hope that the Parliament will pass the legislation as soon as possible.
Mr Sannino welcomed the Government’s progress in judicial reform, rule of law, fight against corruption and organized crime, promotion of media freedom and inclusion of NGOs in public policy-making.
He also stressed the importance of adopting a set of constitutional amendments and finding a lasting solution to the question of refugees and internally displaced persons residing in Montenegro.
The Prime Minister introduced his guest to the recent legislation aimed at reforming the public administraiton in line with EU recommendations and the government's latest decision to ensure proportional representation of ethnic minorities when hiring trainees in the civil sector.
