Podgorica, Montenegro (15 August 2011) – Prime Minister Igor Luksic and opposition leaders have reached a political agreement on Montenegro’s EU agenda, which marks a major breakthrough towards resolving the long-standing election law deadlock in the Montenegrin Parliament.

PM Luksic and representatives of the three biggest opposition parties, SNP, NOVA and PZP, have found common ground on the controversial issue of the Serbian language in the national education system and access to Montenegrin citizenship for all the people listed in the electoral register, which the opposition set as a condition for lending a two-thirds support to the election law in the national assembly.

The adoption of the election law is one the key requirements for the opening of Montenegro’s EU accession talks.

“I believe we have taken a major step today [...] which will make it possible for the European Commission to find that Montenegro is ready to open EU entry talks,” Luksic told the press after the meeting.
