Prime Minister Igor Lukšć, who paid his first official visit to Riga earlier today, thanked Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis for his county’s continued support to Montenegro’s Euro-Atlantic endeavours, stressing the importance of small countries’ experience in implementing all the necessary legislation.

“We are now in the process of meeting European Commission's benchmarks,… and we very much hope we will manage to do so and that the accession talks could be opened next year”, PM Lukšić remarked.

He also expressed hope for the improvement of trade and economic relations between the two countries. Small countries, according to PM Lukšić, have similar economic patterns and therefore "should stick together in difficult times" in order to prepare an adequate response to all kinds of further global economic challenges.

The Latvian Prime Minister praised PM Lukšić visit as the first Montenegro’s high-level visit to Riga and emphasised its significance for further Montenegro-Latvia bilateral relations.

He also expressed Latvian readiness to provide assistance to Montenegro regarding its EU and NATO accession, both in practical and technical terms.
