Montenegro and Croatia tighten police cooperation

Zagreb, Croatia (9 November 2011) – Montenegrin and Croatian police signed earlier today at their meeting in Zagreb the cooperation plan that envisages joined activities in various areas, including fight against crime, border control, protection of persons, forensics and special units.

Montenegro’s Police Director Veselin Veljović said that the discussions included cooperation in fight against international organised crime, joint border patrols, special anti-terrorist units, and naval reconnaissance centres. He underlined that this meeting and the signed plan signify progress in the bilateral relations of the two countries, stressing that regional cooperation and partnership is one of Montenegro’s core priorities.

Mr Veljović and his Croatian Counterpart Oliver Grbić agreed that the closest and most important cooperation between their two departments lies in the areas of human trafficking, narcotics, weapons smuggling and illegal immigration.

They were unanimous in the assessment that direct operational communication between the two countries’ police services should be established in the nearest future. In that context, Mr Grbić said he is hopeful that as early as next year the Croatian police would assign a liaison officer to Montenegro.
