Montenegro and USA sign air transport agreement

Podgorica, Montenegro (2 March 2012) – Transport Minister Andrija Lompar and US Ambassador Sue K. Brown signed the Air Transport Agreement between the two countries earlier today in Podgorica.

The Agreement aims to enable airline companies to provide passengers and freight forwarders with broad range of service options, and encourage them to develop and implement innovations and competitive prices, Minister Lompar explained.

The Agreement provides for the “fifth freedom” which implies that the two countries’ airlines can establish an unlimited number of flights between each other and use the airports to fly to third countries with which they have signed the same agreement. It also envisages the “seventh freedom” as the right to carry passengers or cargo between two foreign countries without any continuing service to one’s own country.

The USA, in Minister Lompar’s words, has signed such an agreement with all EU member states. Montenegro chose such an approach as it provides a wide range of cooperation opportunities, expecting it to encourage companies to open air lines, thus enabling direct connection between Montenegro and the USA.

US Ambassador to Montenegro Sue K. Brown said the event reflects “strong and deepening partnership” between the USA and Montenegro.

The signing, which makes Montenegro the 105th member of the Open Skies Partnership, aims not only to enhance travel and tourism, but also to boost business ties between the two countries, Ambassador Brown noted.

She added that one of her mission’s goals is to increase the number of US businesses having their offices in Montenegro.

“By now there are 26 of them and we hope with this new agreement there will be many, many more to come in the future,” she underlined.
