Geneva, Switzerland (15 May 2012) – The Ministry of Information Society and Telecommunications of Montenegro was awarded a prize yesterday at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) for the project entitled Promotion of the Information Society Among People with Disabilities in the category Ethical dimensions of the Information Society.

The WSIS Forum 2012 is organised by International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technology, and awards are given for “outstanding achievements in getting the world connected.” The event is taking place in Geneva (14-18 May) and Minister for Information Society and Telecommunications Vujica Lazović received the award on behalf of Montenegro’s ICT ministry.

According to ITU, the prizes, which are being awarded for the first time this year, “recognise excellence in the implementation of projects and initiatives which further the goals of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in improving connectivity to information and communication technologies (ICTs) in line with the 11 Action Lines laid out in the Tunis Agenda agreed at the UN World Summit on the Information Society.”

The award from the leading world institution in this area is an important boost to the efforts the Ministry invests in building and promoting an information society in Montenegro. This is the third time in two years that the Ministry has received an international award, the previous two being the 2010 and 2011 DISKOBOLOS award for the projects in promoting the information society.
