Podgorica, Montenegro (15 June 2012) – In 2011, there were almost 40% less deaths caused by traffic accidents in comparison to 2010. The encouraging results come from a report the Government adopted at yesterday’s session, which refers to good planning and implementation of measures from the national Strategy on improving road traffic safety.

The report specifies that 58 road deaths occurred in 2011, which is exactly 38.9% less than in 2010, when there were 95 such cases in total. In addition, injuries suffered in traffic accidents dropped by 26.9% in comparison to 2010.

The results mark a notable progress in Montenegro’s efforts to ensure road safety. Furthermore, the report states that Montenegro has met the European Commission recommendation for South-East European countries prescribing that deaths resulting from traffic accidents should not be more than 10 in 100,000 cases.

The policy has been successful in meeting the Government’s Strategy for ensuring road safety (2010-2019) goal to decrease by 50% the number of deaths in traffic by 2019.
