Podgorica, Montenegro (26 June 2012) – The Council of the European Union adopted at its meeting in Luxembourg earlier today the decision, subject to the endorsement by the European Council, that accession negotiations with Montenegro should be opened on 29 June 2012. Prime Minister Igor Lukšić addressed the public following the announcement.
In his speech, Prime Minister Lukšić concluded that today’s decision confirms “the credibility of the EU enlargement policy and shows that the EU values the efforts and achievements of future members.” He also concluded that “Montenegro is given the steering wheel of the EU integration process in this region.”
“This is the most important and the grandest day for Montenegro and its citizens since the restoration of independence. I address you with a great sense of pride and satisfaction,” Prime Minister Lukšić said adding that this is an achievement of “all citizens of Montenegro [...] [which should] unite us in striving to be part of Europe; to continue modernising and transforming Montenegro towards ensuring a greater quality of life in our society.”
Prime Minister Lukšić noted that today’s decision “is a victory of Montenegro, but also of the region as a whole,” adding that “without the Western Balkans, Europe cannot be fully united.”
In reiterating that the opening of EU accession negotiations is an achievement of the whole country and its citizens, Prime Minister Lukšić thanked all those who contributed and also the European Commission and the member-states for their support.
Prime Minister Lukšić underlined that “the work is not over. It begins now, and it will be very demanding, but just as we have so far, I believe we will be able to find the formula to success even for this ultimate stage of integration,” the Prime Minister said stressing that achieving this goal takes an optimistic approach by the whole of society.
He concluded by saying that even though “we have many reasons to celebrate,” we should all know that the road ahead is not an easy one, and that alongside the integration agenda Montenegro must work towards ensuring faster economic recovery and creating new jobs.
