Montenegro starts EU accession negotiations today

Podgorica, Montenegro (29 June 2012) – Montenegro starts accession negotiations with the European Union “this very afternoon”, as President Herman Van Rompuy said following the European Council meeting earlier today.

The General Affairs Council decided on 26 June 2012 that, “subject to the endorsement by the European Council,” the accession negotiations should be opened on 29 June 2012. The endorsement came at the European Council meeting today. In President Van Rompuy’s words: “We have good news for Montenegro: the European Council has endorsed the decision to open accession negotiations, this very afternoon.”
