PM Lukšić discusses Montenegro’s energy development with IRENA’s Director General

biroPrime Minister Igor Lukšić and Adnan Z. Amin, the Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) discussed at their meeting earlier today Montenegro’s large energy potential and abundance in water, wind, and solar energy which could allow it to become a regional hub for exchanging experience in using renewable energy.

Mr Amin underlined that in the years to come the issue of renewable and green energy will be an essential global issue. He added that he is glad the Government of Montenegro recognises the country’s full potential through its strategic policies and documents, noting that this could be a viable formula for the entire region.

Prime Minister Lukšić underlined that the key strategic goals for Montenegro are setting a balance between energy development and environmental protection in the context of EU integration, continued energy reform, and minding the social dimension of sustainable development. Mr Lukšić informed Mr Amin that the Government is fully committed to raising awareness among citizens of the importance of using renewable energy resources.

The two sides welcomed the adoption of the 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption at the recent Rio+20 conference.
