EU Energy Commissioner: Montenegro made impressive progress – keep up the good work

Podgorica, Montenegro (18 October 2012) – Montenegro has made an impressive progress in the energy sector over the past several years; keep up the good work and the adoption of EU standards and energy regulations, EU Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger said in his meeting with Prime Minister Igor Lukšić earlier today in Podgorica.

Electric energy and supply are among the key areas in which the EU institutions are involved and the EU is ready to provide expert support to Montenegro in upgrading its energy sector and implementing EU regulation in this area during the negotiation process, Commissioner Oettinger said.

Prime Minister Lukšić said that the Commissioner’s visit and the exchange of opinions about the energy sector will assist the full realisation of Montenegro’s energy potentials as well as the pursuit of European standards in this area.

Cooperation with the EU is very important for Montenegro and has always served as guidelines for our progress in the area of energy, Prime Minister Lukšić said.

He also discussed the projects through which the Government stimulates various types of electric energy production. He noted the strengthened stability of energy supply, attracting investment, increased use of renewable resources, better energy efficiency, and competition fostering coupled with improved environmental protection as the key priorities of Montenegro’s chairmanship of the Europe’s Energy Community.
