Montenegro potential leader in protecting children rights, UNICEF Representative in Montenegro says
Podgorica, Montenegro (11 March 2013) – The Government of Montenegro and the UNICEF cherish the successful cooperation, which contributed greatly to the overall democratisation and European development of the Montenegrin society, Prime Minister Milo Đukanović and UNICEF Representative in Montenegro Benjamin Perks concluded at a meeting on Friday.
In that context, PM Đukanović underlined Montenegro’s continued commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and its willingness to constantly exercise and promote fundamental children rights.
The two officials voiced satisfaction with the results of the campaign “It’s about Ability”, which helped overcome prejudice and encourage the full inclusion of the children with disabilities into Montenegro’s education system.
The UNICEF aims to support the Government’s efforts in pursuing reforms from the EU agenda, Mr Perks said, stressing that the projects that had been already implemented made Montenegro a potential leader in promoting children rights not only in the region but also globally.
“We are proud that Montenegro has been chosen to present its experience with the inclusion programme to the United Nations,” the UNICEF's Representative pointed out.
The two officials exchanged views regarding every child’s right to a wholesome family life and commended the Labour and Social Welfare Ministry’s accomplishments in implementing such policies. They put emphasis on further strengthening the institution of foster care within the extended family, that is, the development of standard and professional foster care focusing on the children up to 3 years that will be included into the new Law on Social and Child Protection.
