Podgorica, Montenegro (26 March 2013) – “Montenegro is an important partner for the Alliance and an important aspirant to NATO membership,” NATO Secretary–General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told the press conference following his meeting with Prime Minister Milo Đukanović in Brussels earlier today.

NATO is firmly committed to support Montenegro in addressing the reform challenges it faces on its journey towards the NATO.

“We encourage you to continue your efforts especially in enforcing and reinforcing the rule of law and fighting corruption and organised crime. More reforms in the defence sector will also be crucial,” he emphasised.

The NATO Secretary–General thanked Montenegro for its contribution to the ISAF mission in Afghanistan, as well as for its significant financial support for the Afghan security forces and its commitment to remain engaged in the country beyond 2014.
