Anti-Discrimination Council of Montenegro unanimously supports draft Strategy for improving quality of life of LGBT persons
Podgorica, Montenegro (29 April 2013) – Today’s session of the Anti-Discrimination Council of Montenegro, chaired by Prime Minister Milo Đukanović, unanimously supported the draft Strategy for Improving Quality of Life of LGBT Persons for the period from 2013-2018.
The Strategy is of great value, the Council agreed, as its clear and realistic approach, along with the language understandable to the broadest reading public, recognises the needs and issues of the LGBT community, and proposes specific and adequate measures to address them.
The meeting confirmed Montenegro's commitment to the policy of continued advancement of human rights and freedoms, voicing confidence that the implementation of the Strategy will make a significant contribution to the advancement of LGBT community’s status in the Montenegrin society. For the purpose of promoting this strategic document, the Council reached a decision that the Working Group, that was in charge of drafting the Strategy, continues its work.
The Council thanked all the stakeholders for taking part in drafting such an important document. It particularly welcomed the broad support of relevant national and international LGBT groups dedicated to the protection of LGBT rights, who have provided strong support for the draft Strategy.
The Council’s meeting also presented the actions taken towards the implementation of the Council of Europe’s LGBT project in Montenegro, and the measures for implementing the project regarding the police training. The Council concluded that the presented projects are essential for advancing the environment and creating a tolerant and acceptable climate with the aim to providing adequate protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms of all social stakeholders in Montenegro.
