Montenegro, Podgorica ( 18 June 2013) – Prime Minister Milo Đukanović met yesterday with United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression Frank La Rue for talks on current issues in Montenegro related to media and freedom of expression.
Freedom of opinion and expression is the essence of every democratic society, PM Đukanović highlighted, adding that he is very pleased with Mr La Rue’s visit, who had the opportunity to talk with representatives of all relevant institutions about current media situation.
Prime Minister Đukanović pointed out that the Montenegrin society aims to strengthen economic and social development, with an emphasis on freedom of expression, in order to improve the quality of life of citizens. He underlined that the Government is committed to providing support for creating better conditions in raising standards in these areas, including media.
UN Special Rapporteur La Rue commended the progress Montenegro achieved during past few years and added that there is no doubt that it will soon become a part of the EU. He also welcomed the country's efforts towards the completion of the legislative framework in this area, particulary referring to the decriminalisation of libel, adding that all suggestions and critics are aimed at strengthening the freedom of media.
The two officials agreed that besides the overall progress, Montenegro should improve the institutional and self-regulatory framework in meeting higher level of professional standards, as a contribution to the media freedom.
