Germany to continue providing development assistance to Montenegro in energy, infrastructure, tourism, food production

Podgorica, Montenegro (8 August 2013) -- Germany is a leading country in providing development assistance to Montenegro and, thanks to joint efforts, a number of valuable projects in the areas of infrastructure, energy and tourism have already been implemented, Montenegro’s Prime Minister Milo Đukanović told the press conference following his meeting with Dirk Niebel, German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, in Podgorica earlier today.
In that regard, he underlined successful cooperation that Montenegro has have with the German Ministry, the German Development Bank (KfW) and the GTZ

“That cooperation enabled us to implement some important projects and to pave our path to future intensive touristic and overall economic development of Montenegro”, PM Đukanović noted.

The cooperation is to be continued, Montenegro’s Prime minister explained, as there are funds in the amount of EUR 300 million for implementing projects in various fields, with emphasis on sectors of energy, infrastructure, tourism and food production.

Prime Minister Đukanović also pointed out German support and assistance in terms of Montenegro and entire Western Balkans’ EU accession process.

“Key issue of the Western Balkan is stability and we believe that stability can be strengthened in order to back up economic and democratic development of each Western Balkan’s country, depending on the pace of their EU and NATO integration,” he said.

He also referred to a German programme for strengthening the rule of law, thanks to which Montenegro will be able to use services of a German expert in preparing further negotiations for chapters 23 and 24.

German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Dirk Niebel pledged further German assistance to Montenegro in meeting EU standards, primarily in strengthening rule of law, combating corruption and organised crime.

Furthermore, he expressed satisfaction with the fact that members of his business delegation have showed great interest in investing in Montenegro, particularly in the areas of water supply, waste waters treatment, food production, tourism, infrastructure and energy.

He concluded by saying that Germany sees Montenegro as an anchour of stability in the region, which can help other countries continue their way towards the EU, hoping that a new chapter in cooperation between Germany and Montenegro is to be opened.
