PM Đukanović meets with UN Secretary General Ban Ki - moon in New York

Podgorica, Montenegro (23 September 2013) – Prime Minister Milo Đukanović, who leads Montenegro’s delegation to the 2013 United Nations General Assembly in New York, met Sunday with UN Secretary General Ban Ki - moon.

“We have agreed that since restoring independence, Montenegro has played a positive role in promoting fundamental values of the United Nations and European and Euro -Atlantic community. It has also set a good example in establishing good-neighbourly relations and advancing quality of regional cooperation,” PM Đukanović told the press following the meeting.

He said that the meeting addressed Montenegro’s priorities in sustainable development after 2015 and its efforts to implement the millennium development goals which are to be defined.

By the same token, he added that the Centre for Sustainable Development in Montenegro will be open on 1 January 2014, and the completion of the UN eco-friendly building in Podgorica, first of that kind in the world, is expected by the end of 2013.

The two officials agreed that Montenegro’s participation in the UN Human Rights Council contributes to the reputable institution’s credibility. At the same time, Montenegro has been making efforts to improve human rights at the national level, particularly when it comes to gender equality and resolving the issue of discrimination of the Roma people and other vulnerable social categories, PM Đukanović pointed out.

Montenegro’s Prime Minister also noted that the UN Secretary General praised Montenegro for its dedication to strengthening global peace through its participation in the ISAF mission, as well as for its police participation in Cyprus and Liberia. He congratulated the UN Secretary General for its efforts in addressing the issue of Syrian chemical weapon.
