Podgorica, Montenegro (1 October 2013) -- Government of Montenegro welcomes the adoption of a legally binding UN Security Council’s resolution on ridding Syria of chemical weapons, in accordance with the agreement reached between the United States and Russia in Geneva.

The resolution commits the Syrian regime to eliminate its chemical weapons program. It also sends a clear message that the use of chemical weapon is a threat to international peace and stability, thus demonstrating the international community’s commitment to adequately respond to the use of chemical weapons.

This confirms Montenegro’s commitment, as a member of the United Nations Council for Human Rights, to remain dedicated to universal values that we share with our international partners in the EU and NATO regarding our common foreign and security policy in relation to global threats.

By supporting the joint statement and the UN Security Council’s Resolution 2118, Montenegro has continued to provide consistent and principled support for international efforts towards finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria.
