Director-General for Enlargement: Pace of Montenegro's integration to depend on implementing reforms

Podgorica, Montenegro (21 October 2013) – Montenegro’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Igor Lukšić hosted earlier today Christian Danielsson, who is paying his first visit to Montenegro in the capacity as Director-General for Enlargement.

At the press conference following the meeting, the Director-General for Enlargement commended Montenegro’s overall progress towards the EU, adding that the progress in the accession process also means increased responsibility.

He placed particular emphasis on the area of the rule of law, stressing the importance of adopting constitutional amendments and strengthening the independence of the judiciary.

EU has high expectations of Montenegro, Mr Danielsson said, adding that the pace of the negotiation process depends on the implementation of measures set out in the actions plans Montenegro has adopted.

“Now it is the time for reforms, it is the time for results,” he highlighted.

As to economic situation, Montenegro needs to advance business environment and to fight unemployment, Mr Danielsson pointed out.

Referring to the issue of the Aluminium Plant Podgorica (KAP), the Director-General underlined the need of pursuing a responsible and disciplined policy, and observing the Association and Stabilisation Agreement.

He also commended Montenegro's constructive role in the region, emphasising the need of solving open bilateral issues.
