Montenegro, Serbia, need to improve cooperation through joint projects implementation

Podgorica,Montenegro (29 November 2013) – Montenegro’s Deputy Prime Minister Rafet Husović hosted Thursday Serbian Minister of Regional Development and Local Government Igor Mirović to discuss regional development, cross-border cooperation and improving relations between the two countries.
DPM Husović informed the Serbian Minister about activities the Government of Montenegro is taking towards balanced regional development. Montenegro has defined a comprehensive framework by adopting the Regional Development Strategy for the period 2010-2014 and the Law on Regional Development, as well as several by-laws for its implementation. The strategy for the period 2014-2020 is being drafted, DPM Husović pointed out.
"Current regional development is characterised by significant inequality. The least developed northern region has great potential and resources which are not adequately valorised . The Government will focus its activities towards valorising these potential through a set of incentives," he stressed.
Mr Husović noted that good relations between the two countries, in particular at political and economic levels, need to be further enhanced through implementing joint projects.
Serbian Regional Development Minister Igor Mirović said that the Government of Serbia wishes to improve economic cooperation with Montenegro and neighbouring countries.
"Through joint development projects and stronger economic cross-border cooperation with Montenegro, we expect to attract funds from EU pre-accession funds easier. To this purpose, it is necessary to work on strengthening local governments’ capacity in both countries, as they will be the main carriers of these activities, “Minister Mirović stated.
Both sides agreed it is vital for the two countries to implement two major infrastructure projects – the construction of the Bar-Belgrade highway and the reconstruction of the Begrad –Bar railway. It is necessary to improve cooperation between business people through chambers of commerce and projects in tourism, infrastructure, trade, agriculture and energy.
