Bratislava, Slovakia (9 December 2013) – Montenegro’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Igor Lukšić met earlier today in Bratislava with Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák.
Slovakia will continue to support Montenegro on its path towards EU and NATO accession, the Slovak Foreign Minister underlined. Slovakia is among the countries that certainly understand the need for further NATO expansion in the Western Balkans, he noted, stressing that Montenegro has been recognised as a leader in the region.
Foreign Minister Lajčák said that political dialogue between Montenegro and Slovakia is excellent and commended the fact that the two countries will soon put an end to the consolidation of the contracting basis.
Deputy Prime Minister Lukšić said that today's meeting confirms excellent political relations between the two countries, adding that, when it comes to bilateral cooperation, foreign relations with Slovakia remains among Montenegro’s priorities.
Montenegro is proud of having a friend such as Slovakia, which is the EU and NATO member state, and which, as a strong advocate of the enlargement policy, put a lot of effort into making enlargement one of the basic policies of these associations.
He expressed appreciation for the concrete and tangible Slovakia’s support in various fields with a view of better preparing Montenegro for the accession talks and facilitating the establishment of European standards during the negotiating phase.
Foreign Minister Lukšić informed his Slovak counterpart Lajčák about developments in the negotiating process and the forthcoming opening of the Chapters 23 and 24, and thanks Slovakia for its assistance during the preparation of the action plans for these chapters.
Both sides agreed the economic cooperation between the two states has been intensified, but the intergovernmental economic commission has to make efforts to advance it, in particular in the fields of tourism and infrastructure.
