A5 meeting welcomes Montenegro's contribution to regional cooperation, implementation of national programmes within MAP

Podgorica, Montenegro (10 December 2013) -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Igor Lukšić chaired in Podgorica earlier today the meeting of the Partnership Commission of the US-Adriatic Charter within second Montenegrin presidency of the US-Adriatic Charter (A5).

The meeting was an opportunity to present the initiative’s activities Montenegro implemented during its presidency, and to exchange views on how to strengthen regional cooperation within the A5 and on the progress of the Charter’s member states towards the NATO membership.

Montenegro’s Deputy Prime Minister Lukšić said that Montenegro successfully implemented the Third Annual National Programme under the Membership Action Plan (MAP), and is now entirely focused on further implementing reforms in key areas of the process. He pointed out that Montenegro, during its presidency over the US-Adriatic Charter, advocated further promotion of contribution of the region to wider security and to strengthening position of the Western Balkans as reliable NATO partner.

The meeting’s participants reiterated their commitment to strengthening regional cooperation in line with main principles of the Charter which was confirmed in the political declaration adopted at the meeting. They welcomed efforts undertaken by the member states within Euro-Atlantic integration, highlighting that each country’s progress will be evaluated on an individual basis. In addition, the meeting commended Montenegro’s contribution to regional cooperation, successful implementation of the third cycle of MAP and carrying out the fourth cycle of MAP.

The meeting was attended by Croatian Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Vesna Pusić, high officials from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and the United States, as well as representatives of Serbia and Kosovo.

The meeting marked the end of Montenegro’s six-month presidency of the US-Adriatic Charter. Albania formally takes over presiding over this forum on 1 January 2014.
