Government of Montenegro sets up commission to follow up cases of violence against journalists

Podgorica, Montenegro (26 November 2013) – At today’s session, the Government of Montenegro established the Commission to monitor actions of the competent state authorities regarding the investigations of old and recent cases of intimidation and violence against journalists, murders of journalists and attacks on the media property.

The measure stems from the action plan for the negotiating chapter 23, Minister of the Interior Raško Konjević told the press following the Cabinet meeting earlier today.

The Commission includes 11 members – 6 representatives from the state authorities (the State Prosecutor’s Office, Police Administration and Agency for National Security), 4 journalists and one representative of the civil society, he added.

The Government appointed Nikola Marković, Assistant Chief Editor of the daily “Dan”, as Chairman of the commission.

The OSCE Mission to Montenegro has showed interest in participating in the work of the commission, Interior Minister Konjević concluded.
