Podgorica, Montenegro (28 February 2014) – Talks with all society stakeholders about NATO membership were made and the latest opinion polls show that 42 percent of Montenegrins support NATO membership, whereas 41 percent oppose it, and we plan to continue talks with the undecided in order to present why we believe membership is the best option, National Coordinator for NATO Nebojša Kaluđerović said earlier today during his official visit to Bijelo Polje.
Mr Kaluđerović discussed the activities of the Government and the NATO Council related to accession to the Alliance, noting in particular the need to discuss openly this topic of national importance.
We want to discuss this issue through public dialogue, and what we offer in this dialogue is arguments. I believe that only a serious discussion and exchange of opinions can lead to right decisions. As far as we are concerned, Montenegro should become a NATO member, Mr Kaluđerović underlined.
He noted that discussions were held with all society stakeholders – NGOs, media, academic community, and many others – which led to the latest results showing growing support for NATO membership, but also a great number of opponents and undecided citizens with whom further talks are needed.
Mr Kaluđerović also met high school students and responded to their questions related to Euro-Atlantic integration, and he visited the meat-processing company Mesopromet which has recently standardised its production in line with NATO requirements.
