Podgorica, Montenegro (15 March 2014) – Having in mind the intention of holding a referendum on the independence of Crimea and the response of the entire international community, including the EU, UN and G7, Montenegro highlights concerns over the announcement of changing the status of Crimea and calls on to refrain from unilateral actions which can only contribute to further escalation of the crisis and increasing tensions, worsen the economic situation and slow down the economic recovery.

The referendum on Crimea’s independence is not in line with the international law and the laws of Ukraine, and as such would not produce any legal consequences, while its results would not be recognised. It would lead to a deterioration of the situation in the country and jeopardize international legal order and system.

Montenegro voices deep concerns about the lack of intense dialogue, and calls for its renewal through the international community’s mediation and for refraining from acts which do not contribute to the maintenance of peace and security.
