Right moment for Montenegro to get a NATO invitation: Meeting between Prime Minister Đukanović and US Congressman Turner in Brussels

Brussels, Belgium (22 March 2014) – Upon his arrival to Brussels, where he participates at the German Marshall Fund’s Brussels Forum, Prime Minister Milo Đukanović met with US Congressman Michael Turner who voiced a message of strong support for Montenegro’s ambition to join NATO.

Congressman Turner noted that this is an “excellent time” for Montenegro to receive an invitation to join NATO, and added that, having in mind the current developments, the issue of enlargement should be “at the top of the list” of the forthcoming summit’s agenda.

Congressman Turner welcomed the good relations the Congress and the US on the whole have with Montenegro and underlined his willingness to make a strong case for Montenegro, noting he values greatly Montenegro’s commitment to join the Alliance.

Prime Minister Đukanović thanked Congressman Turner for his continued endeavours and support to the establishment of the Montenegrin caucus at the Congress, which promotes Montenegro’s Euro-Atlantic objectives. At the same time, the Prime Minister underlined the importance of a letter sent by 40 US Congressmen to the State Department in which they expressed support for Montenegro’s NATO membership.

The two officials agreed that the Prime Minister’s forthcoming visit to Washington will provide an additional boost to the two countries’ strong partnership.
