Anti-Discrimination Council: Institutional framework dealing with violence against women in Montenegro strengthened

Podgorica, Montenegro (1 April 2014) – At today’s session, Montenegro’s Anti-Discrimination Council addressed the issue of violence against women and the efficiency of the institutional protection, having in mind that gender-based violence represents a huge problem undermining women, family and the entire society.
The meeting discussed the information related to the presence of this type of violence in the Montenegrin society, as well as key international conventions adopted by Montenegro, national normative framework and statistic data in this field. A special attention was paid to the measures for preventing gender-based violence and family violence, as well as more adequate approach and treatment of victims.
The meeting highlighted the overall progress made in strengthening capacities of police and social services, judicial authorities and magistrates, and also in advancing inter-institutional cooperation aimed at improving Montenegrin institutional framework as a proper respond to the problems of violence against women.
The Council also adopted the Action Plan for 2014 aimed at implementing the Strategy for improvement of quality of life of LGBT population in Montenegro, proposed by the National team for coordination of implementation of the LGBT Strategy, after a wide range of consultations with LGBT community, civil society and various stakeholders.
