Podgorica, Montenegro (7 April 2014) – “Nowadays, there is no excuse to deprive one group of people of rights or to grant privileges to the other one on any basis”, Montenegro’s Minister for Human and Minority Rights Suad Numanović voiced earlier today at the opening of the first workshop in the field of prevention from discrimination and implementation of the Anti-Discrimination Law.
Minister Numanović highlighted that Montenegro has been making progress in meeting these standards within its legal framework, referring particularly to the harmonisation of the legislation with that of the EU. The Ministry for Human and Minority Rights has issued the amendments to two key laws – the Anti-Discrimination Law and the Law on Ombudsman, in order to empower the Ombudsman and the inspection authorities for initiating proceedings prescribed by these laws, he explained.
“What used to be normal and legally permissible, today is socially undesirable, morally unacceptable and prohibited by the law,” Minister Numanović stressed.
This workshop is just one step towards informing the public in Montenegro about the importance of these laws. The Ministry is committed to working hard towards its promotion and implementation, the Human and Minority Rights Minister underlined.
