Ottawa, Canada ( 11 April 2014) -- Continuing his first official visit to Canada, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Igor Lukšić met in Ottawa with his counterpart, Canada’s Foreign Minister John Baird.
Montenegro may count on Canada supporting its Euro-Atlantic path in accordance with the defined criteria, Mr Baird has said. He underlined Canada’s unambiguous support to the NATO open door policy and Montenegro’s membership aspirations. He stressed Montenegro’s important contribution to regional and global security and the allied policy. The two officials also discussed other topics related to Euro-Atlantic integration and the current security challenges.
DPM Lukšić thanked FM Baird for Canada’s continued support to Montenegro’s NATO integration efforts and also informed him about Montenegro’s reforms in the area of EU integration. Even though Montenegro has set ambitious goals on its European and Euro-Atlantic paths, the fact that we have made serious progress and notable results in a very short time testifies to our strong commitment to these goals, Mr Lukšić has said. He added that the new approach to the EU accession negotiations, which puts the most important issues for the Montenegrin society on the table first, show clear commitment to the highest values cherished by democratic and developed countries. Minister Lukšić highlighted the importance of Montenegro’s NATO membership for the stability of the region and the continent, and added that the developments in Europe, as well as the year which marks many jubilees, mean it is the right moment to confirm the NATO enlargement policy.
The officials also discussed many important bilateral topics. In that regard, Mr Lukšić noted that Montenegro and Canada cherish traditionally friendly relations and added that bilateral cooperation should be developed even further. He underlined that the notable presence of Canadian investors in Montenegro is an impulse for additional economic cooperation. Both sides welcomed the current economic cooperation and agreed that it should be further developed in the areas of trade and investment. In that regard, they agreed to continue talks with the view to concluding an investment protection agreement.
Minister Baird commended the hitherto cooperation in multilateral fora, and especially in the Human Rights Council.
Prime Minister Lukšić also met with a number of Canadian MPs, with whom he discussed NATO integration and parliamentary exchange and cooperation.
