Podgorica, Montenegro (22 April 2014) – Earlier today at the UN Eco Building in Podgorica, Finance Minister Radoje Žugić signed contracts on the implementation of three projects from the Be Responsible campaign launched by the Government of Montenegro with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Podgorica and the UNDP Office. “Be responsible. It’s up to you. Grey economy 0%” campaign encourages citizens to report grey economy to authorities via online and mobile apps and it ensures that half of the revenue collected from the campaign goes into socially beneficial projects. The three projects (Purchase of gastroenterology and colonoscopy equipment for the Child Care Institute of the Montenegrin Clinical Centre; Reconstruction and redesign of day-care centres for children and youth with disabilities in the municipalities of Cetinje, Nikšić, and Plav; and Landscaping of the Ćemovsko Polje Park) were proposed and voted on by citizens.

Successful cooperation between citizens, academic community, international partners and state authorities is the key element in building and cherishing new community values, Minister Žugić stressed. If there were no civic responsibility, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to sign contracts in an amount of EUR 150 000 for implementation of projects which will raise the quality of life of our citizens, Minister said at the event.

Dean of the Faculty for Electrical Engineering Zoran Veljović highlighted that practical usage of academic and scientific skills is crucial for the overall development of the Montenegrin society, adding that the Faculty is always willing to meet state requirements and provide support in dealing with current society issues.

Speaking of current results achieved within this campaign, UNDP Resident Coordinator Rastislav Vrbensky underlined that this initiative represents the strength of civic activism in Montenegro capable to affect development of Montenegrin society in an innovative way.

Minister Žugić also thanked the media for the support and visibility they provided to this campaign and commended the decision of the British Embassy in Podgorica to join this project.
