Europe Day celebration programme in Montenegro and EU honorary ambassadors to Montenegro were presented earlier today at a press conference in the EU info centre. The speakers were: Head of EU Delegation to Montenegro Mitja Drobnič, Director General for European Affairs Snežana Radović, and EU honorary ambassadors: Sanja Popović, Dragoljub Đuričić, and Dragan Adžić.
Mr Drobnič noted this year is a very interesting one for the EU accession process. Montenegro has joined the EU and Montenegro is now at the EU border. Serbia has launched membership negotiations, and 1 May marked ten years since the largest EU enlargement in history, Mr Drobnič reminded the audience. He presented the broad spectrum of Europe Day celebration events and activities, some which are in the areas of culture, gastronomy, fine arts, sports, and analysis of EU membership experiences of the countries from the 2004 enlargement package. He was hopeful that the events will not only celebrate the Europe Day, but also get people thinking about the process and its outcomes and consequences, so Montenegro could take on the EU path in a good way.
Director General for EU Affairs Snežana Radović noted that Europe Day celebration has become a worthy tradition and welcomed the diversity of available programmes. She underlined that those events go hand in hand with the Strategy for Informing Citizens about Montenegro’s EU Accession 2014-2018.
She noted Montenegro’s progress and reminisced on the progress in the 11 years since the adoption of the Thessaloniki Agenda. Ms Radović said that hard work and reform implementation guarantee the success of the European mission. She stated that Montenegro is the leader in the Western Balkans region when it comes to EU integration and added that Montenegro is at the forefront of the enlargement process.
It is extremely important for us that all the messages come across to the citizens of Montenegro, Ms
Radović has said, and added that hard work and dedication to implementing domestic reforms can guarantee success. As we celebrate the EU in all its diversity and unity in the next few days, we should also keep in mind how much work lies ahead for Montenegro and we should now that we have only started the process and are threading the way with a steady pace, Ms Radović has noted.
Ambassador Drobnič presented the honorary ambassadors of the EU to Montenegro, Sanja Popović, Dragoljub Đuričić, and Dragan Adžić. The honorary ambassadors are celebrities from sports and art and they have been appointed on the occasion of Europe Day 2014 to promote European values.
Europe Day celebration will encompass a number of entertainment, education, sport, and cultural activities from 5 until 9 May in Podgorica, Kotor, Nikšić, and Pljevlja. Europe Day celebration will culminate on 9 May, when Dragoljub Đuričić will give a concert.
