Brussels, Belgium (13 May 2014) – The Brussels Declaration has been adopted earlier today at the 17th meeting of the Adriatic-Ionian Council, establishing a basis of future closer cooperation of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative countries in implementing the EU’s Adriatic-Ionian Regional Strategy.
The meeting was launched by Ditmir Bushati, Foreign Minister of Albania, which is currently chairing the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative (AII). Other participants at the meeting were representatives of the European Commission, regional organisations and initiatives, and AII member-states: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, Slovenia, and Serbia.
On behalf of the Government of Montenegro, the meeting was attended by State Secretary for European Integration and Chief Negotiator Ambassador Aleksandar Andrija Pejović.
In his address to the meeting participants, Ambassador Pejović underlined the importance of AII for improving regional cooperation and strengthening the European perspective of Western Balkans countries. The EU Strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian Region should serve as a foundation for new cooperation between our countries at local, national, and regional levels in various areas. This is a step forward towards a strategic development of the Adriatic-Ionian basin and we are looking forward to its adoption this June, Chief Negotiator noted.
He welcomed the idea of reforming the Initiative through concrete activities, such as participation in the development and implementation of the Strategy.
In that context, State Secretary Pejović voiced Montenegro’s strong support for the continuation of joined initiatives and activities aimed at intensifying cooperation and building a better image of the region.
He welcomed the adoption of the Brussels Declaration and voiced his hopes that the AII will serve as a good framework for regional cooperation and will continue making contribution to the development of economy, trade, maritime affairs, tourism, and social systems in member-states. He particularly emphasised the importance of energy and better infrastructure connecting the region’s countries, as well as the construction of the Adriatic-Ionian gas pipeline, for which the AII Strategy may offer a good framework.
Bosnia and Herzegovina assumed the AII chairmanship from Albania.
