NATO Secretary General Rasmussen: Russian troop movements "may suggest" possible withdrawal from Ukraine

Podgorica, Montenegro (22 May 2014) -- “Late yesterday we have seen limited Russian troop activity in the vicinity of the border with Ukraine that may suggest that some of these forces are preparing to withdraw. It is too early to say what this means, but I hope this is the start of a full and general withdrawal,” NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen noted following his meeting with Montenegro’s Prime Minister Milo Đukanović in Podgorica earlier today.

He added that “any meaningful, comprehensive and verifiable withdrawal” would be a sign of Russia’s intention to stick to its international obligations “especially as Ukraine is preparing to hold important presidential elections on Sunday.”

“I hope we will see a political and diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine,” Mr Rasmussen concluded.
