DPM Lukšić in Brussels: Montenegro committed to strengthening stability in Afghanistan

Brussels, Belgium (25 June 2014) – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and European Integration Igor Lukšić attended the meeting of NATO foreign ministers and their counterparts from ISAF partner countries, which took place in Brussels.

DPM Lukšić highlighted that Montenegro is committed to strengthening stability in Afghanistan and informed his colleagues about the preparations of the tenth contingent of the Montenegrin Army which is to be sent to the ISAF mission. He reiterated Montenegro’s determination to take part in training programmes and advisory meetings of the NATO mission in Afghanistan after 2014, adding the country is willing to contribute to global safety not only at the national level but also through regional initiatives.

The meeting commended the overall progress made in Afghanistan and the successful completion of the second round of the presidential elections. The foreign ministers stressed the importance of required intern procedures for the beginning of the new mission after 2014, which will be focused on providing advisory assistance and trainings without combat activities.

At today’s meeting, NATO foreign ministers also adopted the Afghan post-transition operational plan.
