Podgorica, Montenegro (21 October 2014) -- Montenegro's national Safet Kalić was arrested yesterday in Austria on an international warrant issued by the NCB Interpol Podgorica in 2011 upon the request of the state authorities of Montenegro. The arrest came as a result of intensified and long-lasting cooperation between Montenegro's Police and police authorities from a number of countries, Montenegro’s Interior Minister Raško Konjević told the press conference earlier today.
Safet Kalić is suspected of having run a large money-laundering scheme in the period 2006-2011 by taking up loans in Montenegrin commercial banks and paying them back with illegal money, attempting to create an impression of money’s legal origin.
Interior Minister Konjević noted that Mr Kalić had been arrested in Vienna with Kosovar passport on the basis of intelligence data exchanged between Montenegrin and Austrian police. He added that it is on Kalić to decide whether he will be immediately extradited or will he wait for the extradition proceedings.
