New York, The USA (6 March 2015) – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Igor Lukšić met earlier today with President of the United Nations General Assembly's Sam Kutesa.

The meeting discussed the current global situation and the need for more efficient and active role of the United Nations in dealing with contemporary issues. In that regard, DPM Lukšić underlined that the Government of Montenegro will continue being a responsible partner and making additional efforts towards undertaking those important activities.

The two officials agreed that the forthcoming Conference on Financing for Development, as well as the Summit for the Adoption on the Post-2015 Development Agenda and Summit on Climate Changes, will determine quality ofthe  international community's response to current challenges. Montenegro fully supports the international agreement on climate changes and it is strongly committed to the sustainable development concept, DPM Lukšić explained.

DPM Lukšić also delivered a speech at the Institute for international peace, highlighting the role of small states within the UN system, particularly referring to regional cooperation as a more visible mechanism of the UN’s activities and the activities of its specialised agencies. The peaceful resolution of conflicts and greater use of diplomatic measures such as mediation are crucial for preventing and resolving any kind of conflict, DPM Lukšić pointed out.

Montenegro is a member state of the Group of Friends of Mediation and it is actively engaged in the Initiative on Mediation in the Mediterranean, DPM Lukšić stressed, adding that the country is committed to implementing its integration agenda and other reforms in economy, human rights and the rule of law, which represent a part of Montenegro’s contribution to the maintenance of stability and security of the entire region.
