New York: DPM Lukšić meets UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon

New York, the USA (10 March 2015) -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Igor Lukšić met earlier today in New York with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
The UN Secretary-General thanked Montenegrin officials for their support, dedication and leadership that contribute to the world organisation’s efficiency. He welcomed the establishment of the Centre for Sustainable Development in Podgorica and the opening of the Eco UN building, as well as examples of successful joint actions undertaken by the Government and the UN agencies.
Deputy Prime Minister Lukšić said that Montenegro will continue to contribute and be a responsible partner of the international community in the activities at the multilateral level.
Role and active contribution of all countries hold the key to successful functioning of multilateralism, and the forthcoming Conference on Financing for Development, summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda and climate summit are the events of historical importance for shaping a common future, the meeting underlined.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed the necessity of the UN member states’ stronger political willingness to achieve objectives in the field of sustainable development, climate change, inclusive development and the rule of law. Montenegro’s Foreign Minister pledged his political support to the United Nations’ activities, pointing out that the actions undertaken by the Montenegro Government in partnership with the UN agencies testifies to the country’s our desire and willingness to contribute to the improvement of cooperation with the UN and deal with contemporary challenges.
DPM Lukšić and Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also exchanged views on the issues of migrants and refugees in the Mediterranean, growing terrorism threat and other current international issues.
Deputy Prime Minister Lukšić has also attended in New York the opening session of the Commission on the Status of Women, as well as the briefing of the Security Council on Cooperation between the United Nations and regional and sub-regional organizations (EU).
On the sidelines of the Security Council, he hold a short talk with EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Frederika Mogerini.
