Montenegro hails outcome of negotiations on Iranian nuclear programme

Podgorica, Montenegro (7 April 2015) -- Montenegro hails the outcome of the negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program in Lausanne, as well as a high degree of consensus and understanding on this important issue among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5 + 1) and Iran.

The framework agreement should provide for the verification of the implementation of Iran’s obligations by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), with the ultimate goal of using its nuclear programme for exclusively peaceful purposes, ie. suspending international sanctions against Iran. The agreement should contribute to universal respect for the regulations and strengthening the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (NPT), especially in the context of the forthcoming 2015 NPT Review Conference.

Furthermore, the agreement of Lausanne testifies to the fact that peaceful and consensual resolution of long-term and complex disputes is possible, along with political commitment, patience, sincere efforts, good will and mutual trust as demonstrated by all parties involved in the process. The progress achieved is a significant step towards calming tensions and restoring faith, ie. strengthening stability and security in the Middle East in order to eliminate nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, but at the same time to contribute to global security and creating conditions for a more peaceful and secure world.

Montenegro will, as always, continue to consistently support the P5 + 1 dialogue with the Islamic Republic of Iran, with an emphasis on full respect for the obligations set forth on the path towards a comprehensive and lasting solution to the issue of Iran's nuclear activities. In that spirit, Montenegro encourages the parties involved to reach a final agreement on a comprehensive joint plan of action by 30 June 2015.
