Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs commends Montenegro' s accession progress

Podgorica, Montenegro (12 May 2015) -- Prime Minister Milo Đukanović met earlier today with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs, who is paying an official visit to Montenegro.

Minister Rinkēvičs commended the dynamics of Montenegro’s negotiation process during the Latvian presidency of the EU. He pledged Latvia’s full support for the demanding process of reforms, which, in his words, Montenegro has been implementing successfully. He also voiced belief that Montenegro will receive positive news in December when it comes to its NATO accession.

Prime Minister Đukanović thanked Latvia for the overall support the country provides to Montenegro and the region, adding it is necessary to further enhance the assistance in order to overcome several decades of lagging behind and ensure the stability of the Western Balkans. The Prime Minister confirmed his government’s commitment to the reform process, meeting European standards and improving the quality of life of citizens through the process of joining the EU and NATO.

Prime Minister pointed out the importance of bilateral cooperation in the fields of foreign affairs, defense, justice, education and science, as ell as in the transfer of experience related to the negotiation process and the chapters which are to be opened.

The two officials concluded that continuation of the dialogue at the highest level will encourage more intensive economic cooperation between Montenegro and Latvia.
