UN General Assembly adopts Post-2015 Development Agenda
New York, the USA (28 September 2015) -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Lukšić began his several-day visit to New York by attending the address of His Holiness Pope Francis at the 70th Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In his historic address, Pope Francais particularly emphasised the need to join forces in fighting against poverty and other social inequalities with a view to eradicating all forms of social and economic exclusion. He also urged leaders of the UN member states to intensify efforts in fighting climate change, stressing that healthy environment belongs to humanity and that people need to safeguard it more carefully.
Montenegrin Foreign Minister Lukšić also took part in the plenary session of the UN Sustainable Development Summit 2015, which, after months of intense negotiations, adopted an ambitious, transformative and universal sustainable development agenda by 2030. Leaders of the UN member-states pledged to undertake further steps towards combating poverty, inequality and climate change.
Montenegro’s active membership in the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals and inter-governmental negotiations makes a measurable contribution to international efforts towards drafting the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
